SOMETIMES when we dress to impress the opposite sex, we don't get it right.
Sure, a guy may notice you if you've got a figure-hugging dress on that shows skin, but guys also will notice you when you're just wearing your oldest jeans and a Bonds singlet top.
Most guys I know would prefer the latter if you're at the pub because they think getting dressed up to go to the local is a bit crazy.
Sure, dressing up is fun, but what kind of guy are you attracting when you're wearing the skimpy dress? The kind of guy that wants to get to know you or the kind of guy who just wants to take that dress off you at the first possible opportunity?
What we wear can influence people's opinions of us, whether that's fair or not. Just because you're wearing a short dress with boots doesn't mean you're up for anything or that all the guys have a free pass to try to get you into bed.
Still, you can avoid unwanted attention by watching what you wear. I'm not saying you should cover up like you're a nun, but before you venture out to the pub, take another glance at how short your hemline is or remember the fashion rule "legs or boobs, not both''.
If you want to wear a short mini-skirt don't team it with a low-cut top. If you have a gorgeous top that shows off a bit of cleavage, try and wear it with jeans. If it's cold, you look a little stupid if you're only wearing a skimpy little summer dress.
It's that simple. There's a lot to be said about dressing a little bit classy and not giving all your secrets away in one go.
I have noticed fashion trends emerging among the younger generation that I simply do not understand and have found myself getting the giggles over the fashions on parade.
This is especially the case with young guys at the moment, and I am very curious what the 18-year-old girls think about the way young men dress.
In summer, boys were wearing very short denim shorts, "grandpa slippers,'' Matt Corby hair and, of course, the must-have item the fluorescent top. Some of them looked as though they'd spent longer getting ready than an average girl. Seriously, it must take hours to get that multidirectional hair just right.
The colder weather has only really changed the bottom half of the wardrobe and now the boys are wearing skinny jeans. Unless you're in a rock band, I really don't think guys can pull this look off, but it seems this trend has shown strong signs, so it's sticking around for a long time.
Why is fashion so important? Well, many girls would agree that they like to get frocked up to impress the boys. But unless they are gay or work in the fashion industry, your average Joe Blow isn't going to know who Marc Jacobs is, and they probably think that an Oroton clutch is some sort of mechanical part for their car.
Think about it. Most girls spend hundreds of dollars on clothes because they want to be noticed, but usually it's only by other women.
Dressing to impress can only get you so far with the boys - the rest is up to you.
