Most people I know don't really go for the whole Valentine's Day thing anymore.
In general, my friends think it is a commercialised day that doesn't represent anything meaningful and if you need a particular day to say "I love you" to your partner you're in a world of trouble. As a result of my friends' "bah humbug" attitudes to February 14, being a single girl on Valentine's Day isn't all that bad. If it falls midweek, let's face it, it's just another day. Or is it? A single girl with her head screwed on right will seriously not expect anything on Valentine's Day, but when a box of two dozen roses is delivered to reception doesn't every girl in the office for a second hope it's for her? None of them will admit it, of course, but they all get a nervous jump in their hearts and think about that one special guy they like and a tiny wish goes out that he likes her too and he's decided what better day to surprise her with his love.Yuck. It reminds me of high school and those bad 1980s American movies. However, if you do like someone, is it a good idea to do something sweet for them on Valentine's Day? I think this one is only for the boys. Guys, go for it unless she has vocalised loudly otherwise. I think most girls, even your most cynical, will appreciate a cute Valentine's gesture. But girls, I'm sorry, most guys will think you're acting like a lovesick teenager if you surprise him with a Valentine's message or gift.If you are a hopeless romantic and find yourself dateless on Valentine's Day, don't sit around waiting for the Roses Only guy. Be proactive and organise something fun to do with your other single girlfriends. There's the open-air cinema at Mrs Macquarie's Chair and I've been there with a bunch of girls on Valentine's night before it's fun. Or you could all cook a lovely dinner together and gossip about how hopeless all the boys in your life are. Or go out to the pub or a nice bar. Let's face it, it's a pretty good bet that most of the people there will be single, right? All the couples are probably doing romantic things with each other. Whatever you do, have some fun and remember that Valentine's Day is only one day of the year and there are another 364 for someone to tell you they love you. JD
