MARGARET Connolly and Una Hayward are proof that you are never too old to make new friends.
Mrs Connolly and Mrs Hayward are new neighbours in a high-rise block of units in the middle of Hurstville.
Mrs Connolly, 81, has lived in the block for eight years while Mrs Hayward, 84, and husband Ted moved in last August to be closer to relatives.
While both had lived in the Hurstville area for 50 years, they met only last year but found they had mutual friends.
Since becoming neighbours, they have looked out for each other.
"I met Ted and Una coming in from shopping and I helped them through the door," Mrs Connolly said.
"Their son lives on another floor in the block. I said to him that I would keep an eye on them.
"There are six units on our floor, with a lot of rented accommodation, meaning people are coming and going.
"I've always been very committed to community. I'm a country girl but I love the city."
Both women share a regular cut of tea and recently Mrs Connolly took Mrs Hayward to the eye doctor, waited for her and brought her home.
Both will be attending the Neighbour Day free lunch next Tuesday, March 25, at the Ritz Hotel in Hurstville.
The event is being presented by Hurstville City Library and St George Regional Museum.
Neighbour Day was started in 2003 after the remains of an elderly woman were found inside her suburban Melbourne home. She had died two years before, forgotten and alone.
Neighbour Day lunch organiser Maria El-Chami said the aim of the event was to foster community caring.
"It's a chance to swap phone numbers, talk about the best doctors and chemists and who has the best prices," she said.
Mrs Hayward said that Neighbour Day was a very good idea.
"Particularly as you are getting older you need to know people are there."
Mrs Connolly added that there are some people have don't want to make new friends.
"They have got to reach the stage where they don't think that everybody is going to bump them on the head," she said.
Places for the Neighbour Day lunch are limited and can by booked by phoning Maria El-Chami on 9330 6111.
Neighbour Day is officially Sunday, March 30. Residents are being encouraged to invited neighbours to a barbecue, introduce themselves to older residents in the street, meet new neighbours and swap phone numbers in case of emergency.
