FEW pieces of musical theatre include vocally-gifted Estonians, alcoholic Germans and a Russian boy band.
Fewer still pay homage to the eccentric Islandic singer Bjork using a pile of shoes.
However, Eurobeat - Almost Eurovision, the latest production from The Regals Musical Society, covers all such bases and throws in some synchronised DJs from Liechtenstein just for good measure.
Director Paul Morrison said the show took a satirical look at the Eurovision Song Contest.
He said audiences would witness talent from 12 European countries and then vote for their favourite act at the show's end.
Tim Wotherspoon and Anne Wilson, who play hosts Sergei and Boyka, said there was so much about Eurovision to send up.
``Our production is very tongue and cheek,'' Wilson said. The pair said they spent time watching the Russian news on SBS to perfect their eastern European accents.
Engadine resident Julian Batchelor, who plays the rapping Italian 50 Euros, said he hoped the Regal's production would attract a similar-sized audience to the actual Eurovision.
``About 100 million people watched last year's contest and with ticket sales going the way they are, we might even equal that,'' Batchelor said.
Eurobeat - Almost Eurovision opens at Rockdale Town Hall at 8pm tomorrow, Friday, May 16, and runs until Saturday, May 24, with evening and matinee performances.
