Brighton beachside dash

28/08/2008 5:00:00 AM
RUNNERS in St George and Sutherland Shire have an exciting new event to add to their calendars.

The first Brighton Beachside Dash will take place on October 12 and is expected to attract individuals and families from across Sydney.

"The Dash'' follows a 10-kilometre course starting at Dolls Point and following the beachside path through to Kyeemagh, before turning and heading back to the finish line at Peter Depena Reserve in Cook Park.

The event will raise funds for the St George Medical Research Foundation, which supports medical research at St George Hospital.

eFcpdoundation chief David Tipler, said the race will be "a great community day''.

"Unlike other areas of Sydney, there hasn't been a large community fun run in the St George area until now, so we expect a lot of interest,'' Mr Tipler said.

He said the course was "very flat and very beautiful''.

"It's the perfect opportunity to get fit and active while helping a wonderful local cause.''

Kylie Mulholland, of Oyster Bay, said her family was getting involved because the course was "one of the most beautiful runs in Sydney''.

"With the Sutherland to Surf you only get the beach at the end of the race, but here you are running along the water the whole time.''

"Plus, unlike the City to Surf with Heartbreak Hill, the whole of the Brighton Dash is flat.''

A spokeswoman for Rockdale Council said the event was a chance to see what St George has to offer.

"The Dash promises to be a event that will showcase one of the most beautiful beachside areas around,'' she said.

The race will also be the first in Australia to include a local version of a concept used in British fun runs.

The Catch a Dragon concept involves 10 preselected runners completing the course dressed as dragons. Runners will be challenged to run past as many dragons as they can during the race.

A spokesman for the race said that each dragon would complete the race in a different time.

"The first dragon, for example, will run 10 kilometres in 35 minutes, the second dragon in 40 minutes and so on,'' he said.

"So, if you really want to challenge yourself to run the race in a specific time all you need to do is catch the dragon who's aiming to complete the race in your target time and stay close to him or her for the whole run.''

Sounds like a fantastic event. I hope the community really gets behind it. St George Hospital has world-class researchers who deserve our support.

I'm in for sure. There aren't many fun runs in October and I miss them! Could be a good race to get a PB.
