Cleaning up their acts

4/09/2008 1:00:00 AM
THREE food outlets in St George and Sutherland Shire have been fined over the past two months for failing to maintain clean premises.

A total of 183 penalty notices have been issued in 32 NSW council areas since the ``name and shame'' website came into effect.

Laws introduced earlier this year give clearer powers to councils in enforcing food laws. Details of the offences are on the NSW Food Authority website.

Hao Quan Hot Bread in Belmore Road, Riverwood, and Little Mo's Pizza, Frederick Street, Rockdale, were fined $330 by Hurstville and Rockdale councils. Wokstar Restaurant and Bar, Kingsway, Cronulla, was fined $660 by Sutherland Shire Council. The outlet was fined more because it is owned by a corporation.

Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald said this week the campaign would be stepped up. A taskforce, involving the Food Authority and councils, would make unannounced inspections.

``Most food outlets are doing the right thing, but those that are not will be forced to clean up their act,'' Mr MacDonald said.

The public can report suspected unsafe food-handling to NSW Food Authority: 1300552406.
