Icon visits southern Sydney in the lead up to Catholic World Youth Day

2/07/2008 12:43:00 PM
The Catholic World Youth Day Cross and Icon will be carried through St George and Sutherland Shire on Sunday July 6 as part of a 15-day walking pilgrimage through Sydney.

The walk begins at St Patrick's Catholic Church Parish, Sutherland, at 9am and will finish at Oatley Memorial Gardens, Oatley, at 12.30pm.

Organisers will then transport the cross and icon to St Josephs Catholic Church Parish, Riverwood, where the walk will recommence at 2pm and finish at St Jerome Catholic Church Parish, Punchbowl, at 4.30pm.

The pilgrimage will culminate in the cross and icon being carried into the WYD Opening Mass at Barangaroo Bay [East Darling Harbour] on July 15.

People intending to take part in the walk- which began in Wollongong on Tuesday - are asked to register with the WYD website so organisers can help plan for crowds.

To register, phone visit www.wyd2008.org, click on `WYD events', then `WYD Cross and Icon 15 Day Walk' under `useful links'.

For traffic details during WYD, phone the WYD/RTA Community Information Line on 1300 360 933 or visit www. wydca.nsw.gov.au
