Want a skate park: then rally at the Alley

8/09/2008 1:07:00 PM
They're calling it the "rally at the Alley'', a chance for supporters of a proposed skate park at Wanda to show their colours on Tuesday at 4pm at Dunningham Park, Cronulla.

Eastern Area Skate Park Steering Committee member Stuart Murray said the rally would be a platform for young people and to show support for the park.

"We need all skaters, scooters, bikers, bladers, their families and friends to rally together,'' he said.

"There is a groundswell of young people in favour of this project and they want a voice.

"All are welcome to join Mayor David Redmond, George Capsis and sporting celebrities at Dunningham park from 4-5.15pm.''

Steering committee member Chris Lawson said candidates in the local government elections should be taking the issue seriously.

"There's no doubt this will be a key feature of the election on Sunday,'' he said.

"People are passionate about this skate park and they have waited long enough.''

Do you support the skate park? Tell us why or why not.

I think a good idea is to build a bike track between Sutherland and Cronulla that is close to the rail line. This would be a better idea for not only could skateboarders use it but also bike riders and pedestrians. It would be something for young as well as older people in the Sutherland Shire. I think money towards a project like that would be better for the community than just a skateboard ramp in a poor location at Cronulla.

We are for a skate park but not at this beach front location. You can place a skate park in many areas but you can't replace fragile beach front land. This crown land is now part of the Cronulla Beaches National Surfing Reserve and it cannot be developed until a plan of management is completed. It is the intention of the state government that the land adjoining the beaches be retained in its natural state for all current and future generations to enjoy.

Apparently the council has been sitting on this proposal for some years. The last decision on the skate park was put off until after the council elections. I think it would be a good addition to Cronulla and provide a positive focus for our youth as well as encouraging sporting activity.

As a 13 year old i love to do anything with ramps/skateparks, As a scooter rider from cronulla i am finding it fairly hard to make my way to engadine just to get a ride in each weekend. I just think that they should go ahead with the skatepark, And they should have Police checking the skatepark at night, And as other people are saying make it a family park with bbq's and play equipment.
