Under currents: Best surfers to turn out

THE NSW Open, which was held at Maroubra last week, saw some of the best surfers in the state go into action, including the top six ranked surfers from each of the 10 Surfing NSW geographic regions.

Dylan Hannah was the best of our local competitors and was unlucky not to get past the quarter-final stages. Surfing with speed, flair and aggression, Hannah was an early morning standout in a competition which was littered with domestic and international stars. Matt Bemrose, the Australian champion, was the eventual winner and Andy King was on hand to offer support and encouragement to the Cronulla team, which also consisted of Jake Stalker, Joe Sear, Keelan Vietch and Dylan Hayllar.

Sandshoes Boardriders' prodigal son Matt Cook has zoomed to No.5 on the 2008 championship ladder after his second successive pointscore victory.

Cook pipped Jack Irvine, Jack Horner, Jarrod Horner, Michael Samuels and Marty Shiply in a hard fought final held in excellent winter waves to go from nowhere to serious title contender after his recent return to Sutherland Shire after a three-year absence.

Irvine holds a commanding overall points lead after a consistent season of top performances, with five events to go.

Tyler Barnes maintained his grip on the grommets title with a win over Jacob Boylan, Rhys Moffatt and Jesse Horner.

Scott Yealland was in impressive form at Cronulla Point Boardriders, winning the open final from Beau Junk and Brad Howe. Junk and Howe dominated the juniors final, finishing first and second respectively.

Gavin Thoms edged out John Redmond and Paul Ricco to win the Masters with Steve Woodall winning the Grand Masters ahead of Pete Trevena and Rodger Junk.

Cronulla Christian Surfers recent pointscore was held in wild and windy conditions at the Alley.

Dion Earle took the honours in the micro grommets ahead of Kendal Lewis, Ben Leong and Noah Tyte, with Nick Hollman and Ethan Jackson impressing the judges in the beginners final.
