Clubs circle young Sharks

8/07/2008 12:43:00 PM
SUTHERLAND Sharks top players, Brendan Gan and Predrag Bojic, have been offered A-League contracts.

Officials confirmed yesterday that Gan, the brilliant young local junior, has the chance to join Sydney FC, while Bojic will consider an offer from Central Coast.

Leading Premier League goal scorer, Brad Boardman, is also in the sight of A League clubs, as pre-season trials continue over the next few weeks.

The offers came before and after the Sharks' 2-1 win over Sydney FC last week and before the Sharks lost their first game of the season at the weekend.

It was a great night for fans of Sutherland, even if Sydney FC were missing several players, including marquee signing, John Aloisi, midfielder Michael Enfield and Brendon Santalab.

Fresh from two weeks in camp with the National Under 23s team, Olympic hopefuls Mark Bridge and Stuart Musialik made their debuts for Sydney FC.

The visiting A-League side dominated for large periods of the match in front of a capacity crowd of about 5000 at Seymour Shaw Park, leaving coach John Kosmina in a confident mood, despite the one-goal defeat.

"We were a bit rusty, definitely Sutherland were a little bit sharper than us, but I thought we knocked the ball around exceptionally well and played some really good football at times,'' he said.

Sutherland showed no fear against their A-League opponent, almost opening the scoring with a skidding shot across the face of goal in the second minute and later opened the scoring when Neil Jablonski beat Clint Bolton with a blinding strike on the near post.

A curling Simon Colosimo corner one minute from half-time got Sydney back in the game, with Jacob Timpano's header doing the trick.

Sutherland substitute Matt Hall gave Sutherland the lead soon after, dribbling through the defence and giving replacement keeper Necevski no chance with his finish.

A late flurry of activity saw both keepers called on to make some spectacular saves as the action swung from end to end, but the scoreline remained unchanged.

At the weekend Blacktown City claimed a 3-1 upset win over Sutherland Sharks at Gabbie Stadium, handing Sutherland their first defeat of the 2008 season.

"I thought we were poor. We started with confidence but I give credit where it's due, Blacktown were the better side,'' Sutherland Sharks boss Brian Brown said.

"I thought that we needed to clear our lines in the late stages, and we lost the game because we lost concentration.

"We can't play like we did today going into the finals. We have a tough match at Marconi this week and we know that we need to bring ourselves back for that one.''

Did you attend the game? What did you think of the Sharks performance?
