Force powerbrokers deny player rift

8/09/2008 1:21:26 PM

Reports out of New Zealand of a damaging rift between Western Force coach John Mitchell and linchpin Matt Giteau have been strongly dismissed as mischief making by the club's chief executive Greg Harris.

Just days out from the Wallabies Tri Nations decider against the Kiwis, the Sunday News splashed reports of a fallout between Giteau, skipper Nathan Sharpe and Mitchell under the headline "Mitch Fight".

The Sunday News said the Force are set to lose Giteau and Sharpe from the side, despite both being contracted, Giteau for one more year and Sharpe putting pen to paper on a three year deal back in March.

That prompted some frantic phone calls between Force powerbrokers, Mitchell and the players on Sunday - leading to a strongly worded retort from RugbyWA.

"We we're surprised by the story that appeared in the Sunday News in relation to supposed player unrest at the Emirates Western Force," said Harris.

"RugbyWA strongly dismisses these claims after speaking to John Mitchell and the two senior players named in the story.

"John has just returned from a successful development tour of England with the Emirates Western Force squad and has not been in contact with our Wallaby representative players since prior to the tour."

The Sunday News report quoted a source from inside the Force as saying Giteau did not agree with Mitchell's coaching style or the way he handles the players.

"Giteau hates Mitchell," the source was quoted as saying.

"He wants out of the Force and wants to head back to the Brumbies or go to the Waratahs.

"There's quite an anti-Mitchell sentiment among some of the players, they're sick of him.

"Mitchell talks it up very well and he impresses people when he meets them but then he starts his (mind) games and that tends to put people off.

"The longer he's at an organisation, the more bad sentiments come towards him.

"It's got to the point now where some players don't even listen to him."

That report came on the back of another in an Australian newspaper also claiming Giteau was angling for a move away from Perth, and that he was likely to be followed by Drew Mitchell.

Giteau has until the end of this year to decide which Australian province he will play for in 2010, having not committed to the Force beyond the end of 2009.

That uncertainty was brought to the surface after the collapse of fuel technology company Firepower, which left many Force players out of pocket - most significantly Giteau, who was lured to Perth on the promise of a massive personal sponsorship deal with the company.

Rumours have abounded Giteau will return to Canberra where he began his Super rugby career with the Brumbies in 2003 - but much sooner than that he will be key to the Wallabies chances of claiming the Tri Nations trophy against New Zealand in Brisbane this weekend.

And Sharpe will be hoping his shock sidelining from the Wallabies' recent tour to South Africa - which is understood to have devastated the John Eales medallist - will be reversed.

Harris said the timing of the latest report was significant, and strongly denied there was any issue between senior players and coach.

"The report appears quite mischievous and can be very damaging for the organisation and the individuals involved and has to be taken seriously," Harris said.

"We are completely satisfied that we have no such issue in our team."
