 Green takes centre stage

Green takes centre stage

BLAKE Green is being groomed for a halves partnership with Brett Kimmorley at the Cronulla Sharks.

At the Sharks' first skills training session since their season finished in September, former Parramatta half Green and Kimmorley were put through their paces by Cronulla Sharks and Australian coach Ricky Stuart at Southern Districts' Forshaw Rugby Park yesterday.

With the Sharks' Australian five-eighth Greg Bird given extra time off, the solidly built Green earnt applause from his new teammates after completing several drills in front of Stuart and assistant Stuart Flanagan.

Even though Bird starred as Sharks five-eighth late last season, and with NSW and Australia, Stuart indicated earlier this year that Bird does not have a mortgage on the spot and may ``better suit the Sharks' team make-up'' playing at lock.

Kimmorley is still nursing his wrist following an off-season operation, but he and Green looked sharp together as backs and forwards trained separately early in the session.

Stuart's other half option is Brett Seymour, who trained as dummy half runner with the forwards yesterday.

Also sidelined by off-season surgery were forwards Paul Gallen (shoulder), Lance Thompson and Jacob Selmes (knees), hooker Isaac de Gois (wrist) and goalkicking winger Luke Covell, who dislocated his elbow early in last month's Test debut for New Zealand.

Other major new buys for the Sharks who trained at the session were centre Karl Filiga and prop forwards Brian Norrie, Kade Snowden and Grant Millington.
